FAQ

What is MERV?
  • MERV is an acronym for MINIMUM EFFICIENCY REPORTING VALUE.
  • MERV is a relative performance rating system created by ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers).
  • MERV measures the filter’s ability to capture a variety of airborne particles – from large particles measured in microns down to sub-micron particles.
  • The higher the MERV rating the better the filter is at removing substances from air.
  • MERV ratings are assigned to air filters or filter media that have been tested to an ASHRAE standard.
How often should I change my air filter?
  • We recommend checking your filter every 30 days.
  • Most standard 1” and 2” pleated filters indicate the filter can last up to 90 days.
  • Fiberglass filters have a recommended change out period of every 30 days.
  • Each home environment is different: pets, remodeling/construction, smoking can all reduce filter life.
  • Some HVAC systems are designated to hold 4’/5” filters. These Residential Air Cleaner filters – 4”/5” pleated filters – can last from 6-12 months depending on the filter.
How do I install my HVAC filter?
  • Turn Fan Off – always turn the system or fan to OFF before removing the existing filter.
  • Remove Packaging – carefully remove the plastic wrap and or label from new filter.
  • Record Install Date – Record the date in the space provided on the new filter.
  • Air Flow Arrow – It is very important that this arrow is pointed in the right direction. To prevent a filter collapse it should point towards the system/fan. These are found on our pleated filters.
What direction does the arrow point on my furnace filter when installing? And why do some filters not have an air flow arrow?
  • The arrow should point towards the furnace, not away.
  • Only our pleated BestAir filters have air flow directional arrows.
  • See “How Do I Install My HVAC Filter?” for additional details
How do you select the right air filter?
  • If you are interested in only protecting your HVAC system while minimizing strain on the system, then you can focus on lower MERV rated filters.
  • If you have a member in your household that is sensitive to airborne allergens or that may have a medical condition that will be agitated by dust, pollen, and other airborne particles then you should shop for a filter with a higher MERV rating.
  • You could also consider alternating the levels of filtration seasonally to help save on money. Install higher MERVs during pollen season and lower MERVs when pollen is not in season.
Are your filters UV compatible?
  • No, our filters are not UV light compatible.
Is it safe to swallow or ingest your essential oils?
  • Our essential oils are not food grade oils and are for external use only.
Are your essential oils safe to apply to your skin (topically)?
  • Only the Lavender Essential Oil is safe to apply directly to your skin without diluting it.
  • Our Lemongrass Essential Oil and Eucalyptus Essential Oil must be diluted with a carrier oil. These 2 oils should be diluted at a 5% ratio for safe application to skin.
  • Examples of a carrier oil are Coconut Oil, Grapeseed Oil and Almond Oil.
What is that film in the tank of my humidifier?
  • More than likely, mineral deposits are collecting on the tank.
  • Clean the humidifier tank with a cleaner/descaler.
  • We highly recommend the BestAir Humidi-Clean for cleaning of the tank.
What is the average life of a wick filter?
  • This highly depends on usage, and the hardness of your water.
  • At the minimum, we recommend you replace your filter every 2-4 months.
Can I use a humidifier in the same room as an air purifier?
  • Absolutely! In fact, many families choose to do this when a new baby is born, or for seniors.
How can I determine the humidity level in my room?
  • You can measure humidity levels with a relative humidity sensor, usually referred to as a hygrometer.
Can the quality of my water affect the life of my filter?
  • Absolutely, the harder your water is, the shorter the life of the filter. If you have very
  • Hard water, your filters will probably need to be changed more frequently.
  • Hard water may turn your filter brown.
Why is the wick filter turning a light brown color?
  • As long as the wick is still wet all the way through and water usage is normal, the wick is still good.
  • Wick filters help to trap impurities that are in the water.
  • The more impurities and minerals are trapped, the more the filter will change color.
Can I use Scents/Fragrances in my portable humidifier?
  • Typically – Yes. Double check with the manufacturer of your unit to be extra sure.
  • We recommend using “Splash Scents” Humidifier Fragrances. Simply add to the water in manually filled evaporative humidifiers.
  • Unlike typical scented candles or plug-in fresheners, the scents work with your humidifier.
  • Humidity and a refreshing scent are carried throughout the house.
Can I re-use a wick filter?
  • No, you cannot reuse your wick filters; they are used to trap impurities in the water and therefore, the wick filters should be discarded – typically every 2-4 months.
What is a hygrometer?
  • A hygrometer is a device that measures the amount of humidity in a particular area.
How do I calibrate my hygrometer?
Do you carry the black pleat spacers for my Aprilaire Unit?
  • No, you will have to call Aprilaire directly at 800-334-6011.
Do you ship to Canada?
  • No, but you can find our products at Canadian Tire, Lowes, Sears or Amazon.com
  • According to ASHREA (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning Engineers) a good range is between 30% and 60% relative humidity.
  • A wider range, from a low 25% to a high of 80%, can be acceptable for thermal comfort (your comfort level).
  • It would depend on the type of clothing worn and your level of physical activity.
